When are critical barriers allowed to be removed?

After the final visual inspection and air results are acceptable

Containment barriers are in place to keep asbestos fibers from spreading during removal, so they stay up until the area has been proven safe. The right moment to remove them is after two things are confirmed: a final visual inspection shows the work area is clean, surfaces are properly cleaned, and there’s no visible debris, and air clearance tests show that the asbestos fibers in the air are within the approved limits. This combination provides both a visual check and objective air-quality evidence that the area is safe to re-enter.

Relying on only an early cleaning or removing barriers after the project is finished without testing could miss residual contamination and expose workers or occupants. PCA monitoring can be part of the process, but the decision to remove barriers hinges on meeting the final visual criteria and the air clearance results, not on PCA results alone.
